"The man behind the Low Res label offers up this four tracker of tasty electro-flavored machine funk. The first track, "Nerv", opens with pounding, dry-sounding drums that set up a simple martial funk groove. Detailed squeaks and bleeps swirl around the stereo mix as the drums are subtly tweaked and chopped up. Fat synths wash in and out as the tune grows densely around the martial drum beat- suddenly out of nowhere LL Cool J pops in to tell us he needs love. He does not return. The track ends with cheery synth walls morphing into flanged-out bit-destroyed bleepage. "Scorch" is an insistent jungle groove full of sharp snares, slightly distorted bass kicks, spacy synths and distorted vocal samples. The vocals get looped into a tight pounding near-gabber stomp. This track changes up again, this time into a pop-locking robo-groove over percolating drums and bleepy synth melodies. The flip brings us "Escape from Detroit", which sounds like two different grooves locked together but playing at different tempos- one fast and trebly drill'n'bass and the other slow and stoned bass-heavy hip hop. A stuttering bleep melody and buzzing synth presence give the whole a slight new wavy feel- like a mix between Devo's "Through Being Cool" with some rare groove funk breaks record. Really cool. But "really cool" doesn't even begin to describe the last track, "Behavior Modification" a monstrous, speedy robo-electro workout full of Detroit flavor and great dance floor possibilities. Adding on to the new wave flavor of "Escape from Detroit", this track is the most unique thing on this EP, a mix of robo-disco drums, electro synth-bass and some fantastic-sounding chopped-up samples. The rhythm remains 4/4 but with lots of diced-up interludes, adding up to a brilliant robotic disco march that should be a hit somewhere. As a whole this is an excellent release- especially in the quality of the production and the clarity of the sound. Structures are simple but textures are highly detailed- and the emphasis on funk makes it an almost perfect dance record."
